Notched Handle Spoon

Of the type likely inspired by metal spoon designs, this straightforward spoon shows graceful, thoughtful Norwegian spoon carving at its best. The design is basic but well considered, with a dynamic flow to the taper of the handle, perfectly placed and very restrained fretted decoration, and an elegant, slightly pointed bowl. The handle has also been stylishly domed and the edges softened to make the spoon both a tactile and visual pleasure. The darker spoon is spalted birch and the lighter is maple; since the handle is mostly unadorned, this is a wonderful design for showing the attractive wood grain and figure to its maximum potential.

You must treat the notches on the sides of the handle deftly. If the two sides are even slightly out of alignment, the spoon will lose its balance and elegance and become clumsy. Make sure the notches are very cleanly cut and that the depth of the cut matches on both sides.

Make the fretted heart large enough to be noticeable, but not big enough to become overwhelming. Center it perfectly to avoid throwing the design out of balance. Leave the stem of the handle as thick as possible until all other work is completed in order to limit unfortunate accidents.
